Role: HGV Technician

Permanent, Full Time

Location: Howley Park Road East, Leeds

Reports to: Group Fleet Manager

Hours of work: Monday to Friday 06:30am to 16.30pm

The role of an HGV technician is both varied and demanding covering a host of responsibilities that collectively represent the key tasks that as critical to our daily operations. The elements covered will be assigned by the Group Fleet Manager to offer opportunities to enhance employee skill sets as well as create robust business contingencies.

Walkers Transport is a leading UK transport and third-party logistics specialist providing bespoke transport solutions to leading manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers and distributors. Our team is currently looking for an experienced HGV Mechanic to ensure that the Fradley depot fleet is maintained and repaired to the highest industry standards, and to ensure that all vehicle compliance is met within the business. Role & Responsibilities

· Perform minor and major repairs on lorries and trailers

· Conduct preventative maintenance on all vehicles in a timely, efficient and cost-effective way

· Inspections and MOT preparations

· Maintain parts inventory

· Maintain accurate records of each repair performed on vehicles

· Attend local breakdowns around the Fradley and surrounding areas

· Maintain a safe working environment

· Carry out additional tasks as requested by the Group Fleet Manager

Skills

· Full driving licence – Class 1 would be an advantage although not essential

· Proven experience as an HGV Mechanic

· Qualified HGV mechanic or qualified by experience

· Good standard of verbal and written communication skills

· Able to use initiative and work alone

· Good understanding of the MOT test requirements and legislation

· IRTEC Qualified preferred but not essential

· Proven experience in diagnostics software

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Distribution Managers to deliver continuous development for drivers in areas of safe and economic driving, driving legislation and operational specific requirements.
  • To be involved in risk assessments where necessary and ensure all training is carried out for specific vehicles / activities involved within the role of a driver.
  • Ensure compliance at all times to relevant legislation, including but not limited to Operators License, Health and Safety and Environmental Legislation.
  • Facilitate communication of best practice and reinforce the “Can Do” culture at all times both internally and externally
  • Live the Walkers Mission, Values and “Can Do” rules at all times.

STRATEGIC RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Continuously and consistently assess driver performance and look for opportunities to improve on fleet and personal injury claims to reduce insurance premiums.
  • Improve fuel economy – SAFED Driving
  • To deliver practical and classroom based training
  • Focus on continual improvement and standardisation of process and systems across the Driver team, managing any changes in line with agreed best practice for change management projects.

OPERATIONS RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure all drivers receive a full and complete induction program
  • To undertake assessment of new drivers during interview process
  • Complete all post collision assessments within company timescales
  • Review telematics data to identify drivers who require training
  • Complete 6 month assessments on all drivers
  • Administer and manage training records
  • Ensure all legislative updates are implemented and reviewed
  • Ensure full compliance with health and safety laws and regulations by maintaining Health and Safety standards and training programmes according to Walkers policies and statutory requirements.
  • Monitor individual driver performance on legislation (EU driving laws, WTD and missing mileage) – Develop a corrective training plan for drivers that do not adhere to legislation or achieve DVSA standards
  • Monitor KPI reporting and take early action to rectify the causes of under-achievement.
  • Ensure company equipment is kept in good condition and is serviceable at all times in line with KPI’s
  • Support in the delivery of effective Rick assessments and safe working practice

Education and Experience

  • HGV Class 1
  • JAUPT registration
  • Driver assessor / Instructor – RTITB / DSA registered
  • GCSE or O’Level (Including English and Math’s)

Other

  • Computer literate, proficiency in MS office, especially Excel
  • Proficiency in routing / planning software
  • Available to travel across the UK for training and customer or internal meetings

Applicant Requirements:

We are looking for someone who has a strong experience with FLT within a Pallet network, the environment is fast passed, and you will be working in a busy cross dock warehouse. Your ability to communicate, engage and look for improvement within a warehouse environment are key aspects of the role.

An Flt Licence with counterbalance is essential.

Minimum of 1 years’ experience working in a warehouse environment, and experience of shunting will be essential.
